Revision Lip Surgery

Revision lip surgery is the procedure to correct or change the results of a prior lip augmentation procedure. Reasons for revision surgery may include any combination of the following:

  • lips that are too large

  • lips that are too small

  • asymmetry (uneven lips)

  • need for a lip lift

  • change the type of implant

  • implant displacement

  • implant extrusion

  • infection

  • general placement of implant or injectable

  • implant removal

  • scar problems (keloid, hypertrophic)

Many times your original surgeon can correct any of the above, although for severe problems which you think may be the fault of the surgeon it may be best to seek another opinion.

Insurance Issues

Insurance usually does not cover any of the above scenarios for revision surgery except for extreme cases (i.e. necrosis). All policies are different, so be sure to review your own coverage. For cases where there is slight to debilitating pain, costs for removing an implant are usually covered.

Revision Lip Surgery Cost

Please determine this issue before your primary lip augmentation surgery, and get your surgeon’s revision policy in writing. If you are reading this after the consultation, but before your surgery, you may wish to call your surgeon and discuss revision fees.

In the case of revision surgery, you will most likely pay your own medication costs. If your surgeon operates in a hospital setting, you will likely have to pay for any fees incurred, including for the OR and recovery room, plus your anesthesiologist's fees.
